I am 56 years old as I write this. And I’m starting a new career. That is, I’ve had a photography business as a side gig for 9 years. Throughout the years, many people said, “Why don’t you do this full time? You can make more money”, etc. In short, I just felt it was too risky. Too risky with two kids in college, what about health insurance, photography is seasonal, I don’t have a studio, and so on.
But then, life happened. If you read my email you know about the events that transpired that changed the way I thought about the rest of my life. (In short, close friend betrayal, dad died, divorced after 25 years). Life is precious, and we are here for a very limited time.
One of my favorite books is Becoming by Michelle Obama. In it, she writes: “For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.”
So, in essence, I decided to pivot. I decided to take a risk. While I loved teaching, and it was a rewarding career for a long time, my heart just wasn’t in it anymore. I wanted to be my own boss, I want to uplift and encourage women to see their worth and beauty.
I write this to say, do the thing. Follow your dreams and your intuition. If you need to keep your day job as a means to support you while you are building, do it. Don’t let fear or what others think stop you. YOU ARE UNSTOPPABLE.
